Is Coloring Addictive and Does it Relieve Stress?

Being new to coloring, I would have to say, “Yes”.

I colored every page of my new coloring book, “Get Back to Nature” so that I could display pages on this website and on social media and by the time I got to the last page I would have to say I am “hooked”.

I was going through a very stressful time in my life and when I was coloring my mind was not dwelling on the negatives. It was creating something beautiful which is a positive.

So in my very unscientific example it helped to relieve my stress. I went to sleep after I was done coloring and by the next morning things didn’t look so bad. So coloring helped me to get over something that was bothering me.  It didn’t solve the problem, but helped me to bridge the gap from being pessimistic to optimistic. And by using my creative muscle the next morning I was thinking of ways to solve my problem which is a positive thing to do.

There is also a sense of empowerment that one gets when you complete a page and look at it. There was a blank black and white page there and now it is colored and nice enough to frame.

Even though I am a creative person, the creative muscle needs to be exercised. Some people say they have no creativity which is not true. Everyone has a left and right side of their brain. One side is analytical and the other controls your creativity.

If someone doesn’t use their creative side it is still there but because you don’t use it, you think that it went somewhere. It didn’t. Coloring is a creative exercise that makes your creative muscle stronger which is great news if you have a job or career that doesn’t use that side of your brain.

Also, we all lead very stressful lives. Just merely living means we will come across stressful situations. Some people turn to alcohol or drugs to escape their situation even for a short time. I have never done that but my point is that I would rather color my way through to the other side. It is a much better solution.

During various times in my life I have had a positive addiction to exercise because it releases endorphins which make you feel good naturally and gets rid of my negative emotions. I can now say I have another positive addiction – coloring. So now I have a choice. When something stresses me out I can either do some aerobics or reach for my colored markers and a blank coloring page.

To sum it up, “Yes” coloring is addictive and it also relieves stress – for me. If you haven’t tried coloring to date, give it a try. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Framed Art (Colored Pages) from “Get Back to Nature”

The first page I colored became the cover. The second one was Old Man’s Cave State Park. The third page was the “Butterfly” page.

I used markers to color it, then I went over the markers with a glitter pen. I liked it so well I decided to frame it. From the on I decided to take pictures of all the pages I colored and frame them.

I had designed them as “mini posters” and this proves my point that you can frame them for yourself or to give as gifts to others who also love nature and the outdoors.

Hint: When you do this the only requirement is to take 1/4 inch off the left margin. That will give you a 1/2″ margin around all sides. The reason for this is because I added 1/4 inch to the spine for easier removal and ease in coloring if you keep it in the book.

I also use Dollar Store simple 81/2 x 11 black document frames that I bought for a reasonable price several years ago. They work and look just fine. If you give them away as a gift no one is going to ask where you got the frame from and it does make it more reasonable to frame them.

My First Attempts at Coloring

I Love the Hocking Hills

I Love the Hocking Hills

To be honest with you, the front cover for “Get Back to Nature” is the first time I have colored as an adult. This page is my second attempt. It was done with a set of 100 markers from US Art Supply that I got on Amazon.

I went with markers as the first attempt at coloring the cover was done with colored pencils and I found that they did not scan well, especially for a cover.

I would love to have others with more experience than I with colored pencils and shading to color this page and post it to my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AdultColoringBooksTerriBaker/

I have seen some beautiful work done on the internet and I know you are out there. Please show me just what can be done with the black and white pages that I designed and drew for others to color.

I would love to see some of the fantastic “masterpieces” that colorists out there can do.  I consider what I have done as a starting point and would love to see what others can do. Are you up to it?

“Get Back to Nature” Video

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Even though my video skills are not the greatest, you can get an idea of the interior of “Get Back to Nature” – an adult coloring book inspired by the Hocking Hills.

Note: The video file was too large to upload to this site, but Facebook took it slowly, but it uploaded it all. Please go to the Facebook link below to view the video.

Thanks,

Terri

Coloring Guide for “Get Back to Nature” Adult Coloring Book

Five Photos Used to Create “Get Back to Nature”

I am including a back cover design that I never used that has four of the four photos that were used when drawing pages for “Get Back to Nature”. At the last minute I included a Santa Train page so I am including that photo as well.

When I was growing up we used to have “Paint By Number” craft projects. You can think of this as looking as an actual scene in nature and coloring it with your colored pencils. I have made it easier for you by giving you the drawing and composition. All you have to do is add the color.

You can use these photos as a guide when coloring a scene as close to nature as possible or be creative and use whatever colors your heart desires. Just have fun!

By the way, the young girl in two of the photos is my daughter when she was a child. She loved to “pose” for me so that I could use photos from my personal collection when making my guides and adult coloring book. The Cedar Falls picture has both my daughters when they were kids. They are both grown and adults now. How quickly the time flies!
